Case Study:
Fashion Designer Spotlight: Saba Tark

Saba Tark, a former student of the course Fashion Flats using Adobe Illustrator, already had an impressive résumé before joining Textilice. She worked as a designer for renowned names such as Jan Taminiau, Viktor & Rolf, Lidewij Edelkoort, and Elie Saab. In addition, she developed several of her own haute couture collections.
One collection earned her a nomination for the prestigious Frans Molenaar Award, while another was showcased in Dubai.
First of all: thank you, Saba, for contributing to this article!
Looking back on your experiences, which one would you most like to relive and why?
I would choose my time working with Lidewij Edelkoort. Working with her greatly helped me understand the essence of design and pushed me to expand my boundaries as a designer.
A particularly special assignment was working with an authentic weaving loom at the Textielmuseum in the Netherlands. The loom was more than 200 years old, and I had the opportunity to develop my own fabric for one of Lidewij Edelkoort’s projects. That was an unforgettable experience.

What advice would you give to others who want to launch their own fashion line?
There is too much to mention, but a few key points stand out: find a strong business partner and an investor. That is truly essential if you want to build a successful brand.
It is also important to clearly define your target audience and design with their needs and expectations in mind.
If you are starting without a fashion background, I would strongly recommend bringing in someone with industry experience who can guide you through the process.

What value did the course Fashion Flats using Adobe Illustrator add for you?
I learned technical drawing at school, but not as extensively as at Textilice. Being able to create technical drawings is incredibly important if you want to communicate professionally with your production team. The training gave me real depth and confidence in that area.
What are you currently working on?
At the moment, I work as a freelancer for several fashion companies. I design collections, develop samples, and create mood boards and color palettes. I also supervise fitting sessions and sample reviews. And recently, I have started producing technical drawings as well.
